Oct 1, 2011 Ann & Frank's 50th Anniversary celebration

Ann & Frank's actual anniversary was on Sept. 30th.

The celebration was started at The Mandarin.

There were 25 in our party.

Ann, with the help of Leah & Esther made name tags for everyone.

Blowing out the candle.

As with any celebration comes the tinkling of glasses and a 'kissy'.
Herman had everyone sing 'Happy Anniversary to you'.

Back at the home of Ann & Frank, it was time for pictures.

Gorgeous arrangements and bouquets everywhere.
Franklin made a toast of champagne to his mom and dad.

Reminiscing with Ann & Frank's wedding album.

They both still look fantastic.
Herman and Betty came across the poems from Ann & Frank's wedding when they were going through things in their home in Calgary.  The Dutch prose was scripted by  Frank's dad and shared at Ann & Frank's wedding.   Herman translated the poems into English.  It sounded like a multi-step process: taking Dutch poetry into Dutch regular text, then translating the regular text into English, then creating a poem in English from that.  The most amazing thing was that  August commented that he could hear their father’s voice in the English.  Herman did a fantastic job.

Herman sharing in the poetry reading.
Co read something she had written just for this occasion.  She mentioned the times that they had visited in Canada and the times that Ann & Frank  had visited in Holland.  She gave them a collection of photos from when she and Frank were very young.

Sisters-in-law:   Ewa & Susanne.

Margreet spoke about the 6 times she had come to Canada and visited with the family.   She also gave a collection of photos – one from each of those 6 visits.

Ann & Frank seem to thoroughly enjoy themselves.

Cousins, Adam and Andrew.

Ann & Franks's grandchildren
William, Adam, Andrew, Esther & Leah.

A computer generated photo book is a gift from their children.   They worked together as siblings to gather photos from Ann & Frank's photo albums and their own collections.  Claudine wrote the text of the story line then Susanne put text and photos together in the book.
The 50th anniversary celebration will also be added before it gets printed.

This gift they will always treasure.

Carla looking at the wedding album.

A hug for her mom.
Esther and Susanne.
They did an absolutely fabulous job in serving us all drinks and food.
Never sat down for a break.  The whole day was a huge success. Lots and lots of planning.
Thanks sooo much.  Love you all

  5. Thank you Auntie Alida for this great blog post. You put the story together well. And it's fantastic that relatives who weren't there can see it too.
I think Leah and Esther were doing jumping jacks to keep warm rather than a happy dance. However, they were indeed happy that day! Thanks for capturing the kids' activities - we didn't have much chance to hang out with them that day. Our hands were full as you had written, also with keeping Mom out of the kitchen! I'm glad we were successful.
The photo book is ordered - we look forward to seeing the final result.
Thanks for celebrating with us and for posting this great way to remember many details.

  6. Hi Marcel and Alida,

Thanks so much for sending these precious pictures of the adoption of your newest grandson. What a precious little guy who seems to fit right into his home and siblings and with animals and nature close by it is both frightening and very exciting for him I’m sure. The pictures are priceless! It was very wonderful to connect somewhat at Frank and Ann’s 50th. This adds to your stories at the time and we appreciate you thinking to include us when you sent these out. That is almost a month ago already. Time keeps flying on. Love from both of you to you and your precious kids and grandkids.
Hug from Betty and Herman in Calgary
